Why are people not staying on your website?
When you have a website in place to promote your business, it can be incredibly frustrating to find that it’s not performing how you want it to. You might not be selling products, receiving enquiries, and are just noticing that people aren’t staying on your site for long at all.
So, what could be some of the reasons for this?
Slow website speed
If your website doesn’t load fast, it will immediately be off-putting to a user. With the fast-paced world we live, people don’t like to wait around and with the increased use of mobiles which can see you be swiped away in favour of a competitor if you don’t load quickly, slow website speed could be a reason why people aren’t staying around for long.
Poor, unappealing design
The look of your website is the first impression a customer gets of you, so if your website is poorly designs and unappealing, there’s a good chance they won’t stick around. If your website looks outdated and unloved, users will definitely be hitting the back button and exploring alternatives.
Unclear call to actions
You need to make it clear and easy for a customer to understand what you want them to do. Nice big headings with ‘Call us now…’ or ‘Buy now’ can make a huge difference and immediately catch the eye, enabling a user to see what they have to do next. If a user is unsure of where to go or what to do on your site, they’ll be going elsewhere.
Lack of understanding of your audience
Even with the most attractive website design, if it doesn’t reflect your end user, they won’t be staying on it. The website content needs to appeal directly to your target audience, as not doing so can leave them feeling confused and like your website is not the place for them.

Hard to navigate and get to the point
Making a simple user journey is key, so if you are sending users around the houses and from one page to the next before they can make a final purchase or enquiry, they’ll lose interest and go elsewhere. For instance, on a product page, you don’t need to immediately show a customer all of the product details; have this available further down the page but give the basics and how to buy right at the very top!
